The New Robber Barons: Part III โ The Vanishing Corporate Tax ๐ฐ๐ Playing Hide-and-Seek with Billions ๐ต๐ฉ
By Iron Ideals Ida Tarbell ๐งน๐ชถ (Americaโs resident Divine muckraker โจโช)
๐ฏ Idaโs Opening Volley ๐ฏ
When I chased Rockefeller ๐ฉ๐ข๏ธ through his labyrinth of rebates ๐๐ and secret contracts ๐คซ, I thought Iโd seen every dirty trick in the ledger ๐๐.
But todayโs corporations? They donโt just hide profits โ they make them vanish ๐ช๐โจ, like a magicianโs rabbit under a silk hat ๐ฉ๐๐จ.
At least in the first Gilded Age ๐ฐ๏ธ, the barons paid for the railroads ๐ that carried their goods. Todayโs moguls? They lay their tracks on the taxpayerโs back ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ๐ธ, then vanish ๐๐จ when the bill collector shows up.
๐ต The Great Tax Retreat ๐โโ๏ธ๐
1950s ๐: Corporations paid 52% top federal rate ๐ฐ.
Today ๐ฐ๏ธ: Official rate is 21% โ but many pay far less โฌ๏ธ.
Dozens of Fortune 500 firms (Amazon ๐ฆ, Netflix ๐บ, AT&T ๐, etc.) paid 0% federal taxes ๐ซ๐ต while reporting billions in profits ๐ต๐.
Result? YOU pay for:
๐ฃ๏ธ Highways
โ๏ธ Courts
๐๏ธ Military
๐ Schools
โฆwhile corporations drive their armored trucks ๐๐ฐ right over them toll-free ๐.
๐งฎ The Tricks of the Trade ๐ฉโจ
Modern moguls ๐บ๐ employ armies of accountants ๐งโ๐ผ๐งพ to master disappearing acts ๐ช:
Profit Shifting ๐ โ Route sales through Ireland ๐ฎ๐ช, stash profits in Bermuda ๐๏ธ, then cry โweโre brokeโ in America ๐บ๐ธ.
Accelerated Depreciation ๐ญ โ Pretend machines wear out faster than they do โณ, so income vanishes ๐.
Stock Option Deductions ๐ โ Treat executive bonuses ๐ผ๐ต as โbusiness expenses,โ while workersโ pay = โcost of laborโ ๐ง.
Offshore Cash Hoards ๐๏ธ๐ฐ โ Trillions hidden abroad โ๏ธ, then lobby Congress ๐๏ธ for โrepatriation holidaysโ ๐.
Rockefeller had rebates ๐๐ข๏ธ. Todayโs wolves ๐บ lounge in tax havens with beachfront views ๐๐น.
๐ The Vanishing Contribution ๐ชซ
1950s ๐: Corporate taxes = ~30% of federal revenue ๐ฆ.
Today ๐: Closer to 10% ๐.
Who makes up the gap? ๐ Ordinary taxpayers ๐จโ๐ซ๐ฉโ๐ง๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ through payroll ๐งพ and income taxes ๐ณ.
Old robber barons robbed wages ๐งโ๐ญ.
New robber barons rob paychecks + tax bills ๐ณ๐ต.
๐ณ Idaโs Closing Strike ๐ณ
In Standard Oilโs day ๐ข๏ธ, I said no man โ however rich ๐ผ๐ โ was above the law โ๏ธ.
Today? Corporations float above it like balloons ๐ filled with untaxed helium ๐จ.
When corporations brag about โefficiency โก,โ they mean escaping responsibility ๐๐จ.
When they claim โglobal competitiveness ๐,โ they mean competitive tax dodging ๐๏ธ๐ผ.
A society where billion-dollar companies ๐ข๐ฐ pay nothing ๐ซ๐ต, while teachers ๐ฉโ๐ซ pay more ๐ณ, is not civilization ๐๏ธ.
It is strip-mining by spreadsheet ๐โ๏ธ.
So I ask you, dear reader ๐ง๐: Who is the bigger magician ๐ฉ?
The conjurer on stage ๐ญ, or the corporation that makes billions disappear ๐ต๐ before your very eyes ๐โจ?
๐ Next up: Part IV โ Strip-Mining America ๐ช๐๏ธ: Towns, Jobs, and Communities Hollowed Out.
