The Home Is the New Passport ๐๐ก
By Peeved Pope John 35 (๐ป๐บ๐ธ Still Irish, Eternally Handsome)
My fellow Americans ๐บ๐ธโ
We believe passports ๐ make us citizens.
We believe flags ๐ณ๏ธ, pledges ๐โโ๏ธ, and Social Security cards ๐งพ make us members of this great republic.
But let me tell you the hard truth ๐ฅ:
A passport gets you across borders ๐โ๏ธโฆ
A deed ๐ gets you across the wealth gap ๐๏ธ.
Without a deed, youโre not a citizen of the asset class ๐ณ. Youโre a tourist ๐ โ disposable, temporary, tolerated.
The Numbers ๐ข
๐ Homeownership = Political Power ๐ณ๏ธ
Homeowners vote at higher rates than renters (by ~10โ15%).
Communities with high homeownership = more stable schools ๐ซ, safer streets ๐, stronger representation ๐ผ.
๐ฐ Wealth Divide ๐ธ
Median homeowner net worth = $396,200.
Median renter = $10,400.
Thatโs not a passport check โ thatโs a border wall ๐งฑ.
๐ Locked Out Generations ๐ฉโ๐๐จโ๐
First-time homebuyers today make up the smallest share in decades ๐.
Meanwhile, corporate landlords ๐ฆ scoop up homes by the thousands.
This isnโt rentersโ fault โ.
Wages fell behind housing costs ๐ตโฌ๏ธ.
Zoning blocked starter homes ๐ซ๐ .
Easy credit for Wall Street ๐ณ, impossible hoops for families.
We didnโt choose exile ๐. We were pushed.
The Home as the New Passport ๐๐ก
Think about it:
A passport lets you travel ๐ซ, but a deed lets you stay ๐ก.
A passport proves identity ๐ชช, but a deed proves permanence ๐๏ธ.
A passport expires โณ, but a deed (once paid) is forever โพ๏ธ.
No deed? Youโre a guest on a month-to-month visa ๐๏ธ.
With a deed? Youโre a citizen with permanent residency in Americaโs future ๐บ๐ธ.
Ask Notโฆ ๐ค
So I say to you today:
Ask not what your landlord can do for you ๐ โโ๏ธ โ ask why the deed is treated like a passport ๐ and locked away from the people ๐๏ธ.
Solutions exist ๐ก:
First-purchase rights for citizens before Wall Street ๐ฆ.
Build affordable starter homes like we build cars ๐.
Simplify buying a house so itโs as quick as buying a ticket ๐๏ธ.
Because until every citizen can hold a deed ๐, many of us will remain foreigners in our own land ๐.
The home is the new passport ๐๐ก โ and citizenship is not real until we all have one.
