The Landlord’s Camelot 🏰
By Peeved Pope John 35 (👻🇺🇸 Still Irish, Eternally Handsome)
My fellow Americans 🇺🇸—
When I speak of Camelot, you imagine knights ⚔️, honor, and shining castles 🏰.
But today’s Camelot? It belongs to the landlords. A kingdom of tribute, not of citizens.
Every month, millions of us line up to deliver rent checks 💸 like peasants bearing baskets of grain to the castle gates.
And who sits on the throne? Not kings or queens — but property companies, private equity giants, and corporate landlords 🦈.
The Numbers 🔢
📊 Corporate Landlords: The top Wall Street firms now own hundreds of thousands of homes, especially single-family houses that once belonged to citizens.
📈 Rent Inflation: From 2010–2023, rents rose nearly 5x faster than wages 💵.
🏚️ Starter Homes: In the 1970s, 2 in 5 new houses were entry-level. Today? Barely 1 in 10 🏗️.
And once again — let’s be clear — this is not the renter’s fault ❌.
Wall Street outbids families with cash offers 💳.
Zoning keeps affordable housing off the market 🚫.
Developers chase luxury profits instead of community needs 🏦.
We are not serfs by choice. We’ve been fenced out of ownership by design.
Why It Matters ⚖️
A democracy built on renting is not a democracy — it’s feudalism in skinny jeans 👖.
Landlords hold the deeds 📝, we hold the leases 📄. And leases can be revoked with 30 days’ notice.
Citizenship without ownership is like Camelot without Excalibur ⚔️ — powerless, temporary, make-believe.
Ask Not… 🎤
So I say to you today:
Ask not why Camelot belongs to landlords 🏰 — ask how we take back the kingdom for citizens 👑.
Solutions are in reach 💡:
Guarantee citizens the first chance to buy homes before corporate landlords 🏠
Incentivize building affordable starter homes 🛠️
Reform zoning so citizens, not hedge funds, shape our neighborhoods 🌆
Only then can we turn the Landlord’s Camelot into the People’s Republic of Homeowners 🏠🇺🇸.
Until then, we kneel at the castle gates — paying tribute instead of holding keys 🔑.
